Cat. #000503522: HERSCHEL BERNARDI

Scarce vintage 8x10-inch black and white portrait, boldly signed in black felt-tip pen in the late 1970s. In good condition, with a few negligible handling dings. Unforgettable Herschel Bernardi began his career in Yiddish-language stage productions, several of which he subsequently filmed for the big screen in the 1930s. After a period of estrangement from Hollywood, due to accusations of Communism, he reemerged as a busy film, theater and television character actor in the 1950s, notable in Irma La Douce (1963) and Woody Allen's The Front (1970), as well as a Tony-nominated turn as Tevye in Broadway's "Fiddler on the Roof" (1971), after Zero Mostel left the role. Possessed of a distinct, resonant voice, Bernardi provided the "Ho, ho, ho!" of the Jolly Green Giant and the dialogue for Charlie the Tuna in the popular television commercials of the 1960s, and also played numerous roles on "The Flintstones" (1962).
